about

HABIBI was created with the intention to pay homage to all our collective ancestors. It is a word that is ubiquitous amongst my Arabic speaking friends that expresses love for family, friends, and even strangers. I find myself always softening and smiling when this word is expressed in whatever dialogue present. This word represents the vibration of the music as well as allyship for all those whose freedom is jeopardized.

The language in this piece is a reflection of all the languages that have raised me, manifesting into its own improvised love language and spiritual scat. What shows up through me is the medicine for the moment. I have come to a place where I trust jumping into the unknown and allowing for the process to unfold.

Nadav, Beth, Erica, and I recorded this piece live and in one pass with the assistance of Luke; Loryn added her Kora parts not too long after. To be able to explore peaks and valleys musically is not something I take for granted especially when it comes to improvisation. In deep gratitude for these musicians who I have come to call friends and comrades.

This being said, in December 2020, WE created together in the rafters above the clinic where I practice Ayurvedic Medicine with my patients. I call the entire space a kin to a cast iron pan, the more you use it the more its seasons. The space is entirely made of redwood and is over a 100 years old. I had always wanted to utilize this space as I felt the natural reverb with all the wood. The prayers were heard and answered when Loryn introduced me to Luke. The flow was super natural and it felt like we had recorded with each other many times before. In fact this is the first recording I have done with all parties present.

Habibi was also recorded on a day after the transition of a magical being in our community ~ Shout out to Soraya Medina. Your spirit and legacy lives strong among us.

My hope is that this piece resonates with you in whatever way it needs too. Thank you for taking a listen and supporting independent artists. A little goes a long way!

All my love,

Sheila
